WORKING groups aimed at preparing local football for a return in 2020 have been established by AFL Victoria.

It has provided some optimism that play will commence at some stage this year following the delay as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a memo released on Thursday morning, AFL Victoria says it will be guided by the AFL, which could announce as soon as next week when it plans to resume the 2020 season.

“Importantly, we have not given up on this season,” the memo said

“We are hopeful that we will be back on the field as soon as it is safe to do so and you can be confident that you will have our full support to ensure this return is as safe and well prepared as possible.”

It’s more good news for local clubs following the announcement on Tuesday night from local gaming and entertainment Buckleys that it would be providing an additional $10,000 to help the region’s 34 teams as well as Geelong Umpires fight through the shutdown.

That’s on top of $5,000 entity payment each club was set to receive.
