Junior footy continues, for now

AFL Barwon has conceded the continuation of the junior football and netball season is a “day-to-day proposition”.

It follows the tightening of restrictions in what the State Government has labelled “The Geelong Corridor” following the increase in COVID-19 cases in the region.

The Greater Geelong, Surf Coast, Colac Otway, Golden Plains, Queenscliffe and Moorabool local government areas are now under different restrictions to the remainder of Victoria, with no guests allowed at private homes.

AFL Barwon said this weekend’s Read the Play Round will proceed as planned with the 100 per cent support of clubs, but they also acknowledged uncertainty around the future of the season as we head into August.

As a result, the local governing body has pleaded for only “necessary” spectators to attend matches.

“In general, all clubs have shown outstanding leadership and a desire to monitor and strictly adhere to protocols, but unfortunately there are still too many unnecessary spectators attending local matches,” Region General Manager Will McGregor said in an open letter.

“AFL Barwon appreciates the desire to attend football and netball matches for the general public, but we respectfully ask that if you are not necessary (i.e. a parent/guardian, club official) that you stay away from the weekend’s matches and throughout 2020.”

AFL Barwon has also recommended those spectators wear a face covering for this weekend’s matches ahead of their mandatory introduction from August 3.

“To put it simply, AFL Barwon wants to remind everyone that it is imperative that the restrictions be adhered to from this weekend onwards; otherwise we may have no choice but to end the junior seasons,” McGregor said.

“AFL Barwon, through its staff, have continually communicated where appropriate and provided up to date information to guide and support clubs through email communication and social media.

“We encourage all clubs to support the push of these messages to your member and support bases
through your communication channels.”
