AFL Barwon clubs and the GDFL have received some welcome news with the City of Greater Geelong to waive building rental and ground fees.

COGG councillors passed a motion on Tuesday night as part of a range of measures to assist local businesses and community groups to cope with the Coronavirus pandemic.

It has the potential to save AFL Barwon clubs (BFL and GFL) up to $8,500 each.

It is likely to save the GDFL, which pays a significant ground rental for its 12 clubs, tens of thousands of dollars.

The waiver, which has been backdated to March 1, will be in place for six months.

GFL: CINCOTTA CLINGS TO AFL HOPE

“This event is the most significant most of us have encountered in our lifetime,” finance portfolio chair Cr. Anthony Aitken said.

“An important message I want to give our residents is that this council doesn’t just believe we’re an economy,
we believe we’re a community.

“For that reason, these packages won’t just be about economic assistance, they’ll also be targeted to help our community.

“We need these packages to support our sporting clubs, our senior citizens clubs, our multicultural groups, our
arts and cultural community and our many, many other small community groups.”

Barwon Heads, who’s Howard Harmer Oval base is managed by Barwon Coast, has confirmed it will seek similar relief from its landlords.

Local football has been postponed until at least May 31 in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, putting the 2020 season in jeopardy.
