AFL Barwon Women’s coach Mel Hickey will encourage her team to take the game on in Saturday morning’s inaugural interleague clash with Northern.

Hickey and her coaching staff have settled on the final 23 for the match at KFC Oval, with eight clubs represented.

“I’ve been really impressed with their skill level, so we’re going to try and be really attacking, and encourage them to switch the ball when they can, and try and take it to the open side,” she said.

“I think we’ll see a really good brand of football.”

Geelong West is the best-represented club, with five players selected. Drysdale and Geelong Amateur have four apiece.

Barwon Heads star Emma Allen has been named captain, with Charlotte Thorne from North Geelong her deputy.

Allen won last year’s AFL Barwon Division 2 best-and-fairest, with Thorne claiming the Division 1 award.

AFL Barwon’s match against Northern starts at 9:50am as part of a triple-header of AFL Victoria Community Championships action, which will see the Bellarine and GDFL clash for the first time in 30 years, followed by the GFL looking to regain the No.1 ranking against Northern.
