The Wash-Up – GFL Round 9

WINNERS

GFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 9

“THE” RESULT

Can’t look past Colac handing St Joseph’s its first loss since last year’s qualifying final. Just when many thought everyone was playing for second in the GFL, the Tigers have gone and turned the competition on its head with an impressive 42-point win. The good news for Colac is that they can get stronger, with Paul Presani, Cooper Stephens and Campbell Floyd and Patrick Seal all missing. “We’ve just got to bring that standard of footy every week, and it shows that we are capable of matching it with the best teams in the comp,” co-coach Rowan McSparron said.

A 200TH TO REMEMBER FOR ‘JET’

Unfortunately, there had to be a loser in the Newtown & Chilwell and South Barwon clash, with club greats Matt McMahon (Eagles) and Reece Woods (Swans) both playing their 200th GFL senior matches. With St Joseph’s loss to Colac, Newtown & Chilwell now sits two points clear on top of the ladder. “It was a really good win by the boys,” McMahon told The Wash-Up. “Tough conditions with the ground being a bit of a bog, and it was one we had to really grind out. We played pretty good football at times, and so did they.” Club greats Mark Hall and Craig Morrissy, and McMahon’s wife Maddy were among those who spoke to the Eagles’ playing group before the game about the two-time Mathieson medallist.

ROBBO OUT OF RETIREMENT

St Mary’s co-coach Travis Robertson came out of retirement to help the Saints reserves on Saturday. And he showed he had lost none of the class that made him a star at Werribee, North Shore and Geelong Amateur in kicking three goals. “I was pretty happy that the coach (Russell McMahon) put me at full-forward; it’s a nice end of the ground to be playing at,” Robertson, who last played alongside fellow former Ammo Tom McArlein with Casterton in 2017, said.
