The Wash-Up – GFL Round 8

WINNERS

GFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 8

“THE” RESULT

Leopold has maintained contact with the top three following an impressive 51-point win over South Barwon at Memorial Park. The Lions would have dropped out of the top five with a loss. However, they are just half-a-game behind third-placed Colac. Coach Guy Morphet says it was one of his best wins since taking charge at Leopold ahead of the 2018 season. “It’s certainly one of them,” he said. “I don’t know if I’d say it was the best, but for the fact of our injury base at the moment, that’s what was probably pleasing.” Tom Gordon, Kevin Bourke, Brandon Howarth, Sam Hughes, Mitch Patten, and 2016 premiership captain Jai Thompson were all missing for the Lions.

CRUCIAL STINT FOR SAINTS

The next three weeks might determine whether St Mary’s can play finals despite a 1-4 start to the season. The Saints, who squared the ledger and received a healthy percentage boost with a 67-point win over Grovedale at Burdoo Reserve, face Geelong West, St Joseph’s at Drew Oval, and Bell Park between now and the July bye. Two wins will be  the minimum, with the grand finalist of the previous three years also hoping they can knock over St Joseph’s in R0und 10.

NEW RECORD?

Did St Joseph’s set a new record in fielding 20 one-point players in Saturday’s win over Lara? The two-time reigning premier played at 25 points, with Lech Featherstone (three points) and Ben McNamara (two) the only players carrying more than one point.

THE KEY NUMBER

6. The number of goals kicked by Sam Nichols in his return to senior GFL action after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in Round 17 last year. Nichols had three outings in the Eagles’ reserves before being recalled to the senior team for the win over St Albans.
