The Wash-Up – GFL Round 6

WINNERS

GFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 6

“THE” RESULT

We still don’t know who the challenger to St Joseph’s is after a draw between Newtown & Chilwell and Leopold in the Pride Cup clash at Elderslie Reserve. The Eagles, who came from 21 points down at three-quarter to snatch a share of the points, drop to second, still a game clear of the third-placed Lions, who face Joeys in Round 7. Leopold will be without inspirational former skipper Jai Thompson, who will undergo surgery on Monday for a compound fracture to a finger. A hamstring issue is also likely to sideline small forward Mitch Patten. Add that pair to the already sidelined Tom Gordon (knee), Kevin Bourke (groin) and skipper Sam Hughes (calf), and the Lions will need something special to end St Joseph’s winning start to 2019.

The draw was the first in the 48 meetings between the two clubs, with the previous closest result a two-point win for Newtown & Chilwell in Round 14, 2010.

BROCK BOOTS LARA TO VICTORY

A seven-goal haul from youngster Brock van Doren has proven the difference as Lara snapped a 19-game losing streak in beating North Shore by 39 points at Bisinella Oval. Playing just his 15th senior game, van Doren had kicked eight goals in his previous 14 games. “He played well. He’s one of these young fellas that we know he’s got it in him,” co-coach Shayne Stone told The Wash-Up. “He worked pretty hard; he’s put himself in some good spots and his hands haven’t been working, and he has hasn’t executed that well throughout the year. He’d kicked three (goals) coming in, but he probably kicked a few points and a missed a few shots that he had. With young blokes, it’s all about confidence, and yesterday he got a couple early, which got him away.”
