The Wash-Up – GFL Round 5

WINNERS

GFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 5

“THE” RESULT

Newtown & Chilwell overcame a slow start against Colac to make it five consecutive wins to start a GFL season for the first time. The Eagles trailed by nine points at quarter time but kicked 12 goals to six from that point on to set up a mouth-watering Pride Cup clash with Leopold on May 26.

THE TALKING POINT

With St Mary’s slumping to 1-4 heading into the interleague break, it appears the fight for spots in the final five is already down to six teams. Grovedale and Geelong West sit a game outside the top five with two wins apiece. However, it is unlikely the Tigers or Giants are going to jump out of the pack and steal an elimination final berth.

WEST MAKING GIANT STRIDES

Geelong West posted its highest score and biggest win under Greg Mellor in handing Grovedale an 82-point hiding at Burdoo Reserve. In fact, it was the Giants highest score and biggest win since Round 17, 2017 against Lara. West has two wins and a seven-point loss to South Barwon to its name since the Easter break. “From a goal scoring perspective, it was a really good performance,” Mellor said. “We’ve struggled to kick over 100 points, and that’s something we’ve really worked on – that connection between our midfields and our forwards.”

THE COMEBACK

Great to see Sam Nichols back in action after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in Round 17 last year. The Newtown & Chilwell spearhead kicked one goal in the Eagles’ reserve grade loss to Colac. Nichols was one of the revelations of 2018, kicking 54 goals. Hopefully, he will be playing at 2 o’clock not long after the interleague break.
