The Wash-Up – GFL Round 18

WINNERS

GFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 18

SAINTS SNATCH FIFTH

St Mary’s will contest a fourth consecutive finals series after seeing off Leopold by 33 points at Leopold Community Bank Oval. The Saints, who started the season 1-4, have won six of their last seven matches to book a rematch with the Lions in Sunday’s elimination final at GMHBA Stadium. “We probably knew after the Newtown game that it was going to look like this,” co-coach Travis Robertson told K rock’s The Wash-Up. “They probably didn’t have as much to play for as what we did, so I’m not sure whether they kept some cards close to their chest. Certainly next week it will be all on the table.” Robertson and co-coach Glenn Keast will have some decisions to make at selection, with Ryley Hall and Dylan McMahon both a chance to return after missing on Saturday. Star midfielder Zak Sherman is also likely to come under consideration after making a successful return from injury in the reserves. Depending on what Geelong does at VFL selection, Paddy Dowling may also be available. However, the luckless Dean Gore won’t play again. He requires surgery on a hand injury suffered in the Cats’ loss to Williamstown at Werribee last week.

SPIDER BITE SIDELINES JOEY

St Joseph’s recruit Dylan Pettingill miss Saturday’s win over Geelong West after a spider bite resulted in him being hospitalised during the week. “He spent a couple of days in hospital and was on a drip for a few days and had a small operation,” coach Paul Carson said. “It’s a really bizarre one, but I’d like to think he’d be right to play next week.”

‘SPEEDY’ TAKES OUT FIFTH BEST-AND-FAIREST, ‘PUP’ NO.1 AT LEOPOLD

He gave his teammates a two-game headstart, but Nathan Deans has still been good enough to win the Noel Winter Medal as Grovedale best-and-fairest for the fifth time. The 2016 Mathieson medallist finishes ahead of Liam Betson. At Leopold, Marcus Thompson made it consecutive best-and-fairest awards, finishing ahead of ruckman Trent West.

BOSELEY BAGS GOAL KICKING

Two goals in South Barwon’s final round loss to Newtown & Chilwell has been enough for Andrew Boseley to win the GFL goal kicking. Boseley, who is the first Swan to win the award since Ian Tomkins in 1994, finished on 57 goals, goal clear of Leopold’s Lucas Boyd, who also kicked two in the Lions’ loss to St Mary’s. Boseley’s tally is the third lowest to win the award in GFL history. Only Grovedale’s Dean Holroyd (52 – 1991) and Dale Carson, who totalled 56 at both Geelong West-St Peter’s (2007) and St Joseph’s (2010) have kicked less.

MILESTONE FOR LOYAL GIANT

Patrick Eastman played his 150th senior game for Geelong West Giants/Geelong West-St Peter’s in yesterday’s loss to St Joseph’s. The club put together a video tribute to him.

Congratulations to Patrick Eastman on 150 senior games for the club. Please enjoy a few of Pat's highlights (modified music content). A great clubman, team mate and more importantly a terrific young man. We are very proud of you Patrick!
