The Wash-Up – GFL Round 17

WINNERS

GFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 17

“THE” RESULT

COLAC is in the box seat to claim the GFL minor premiership for the first made it 12 consecutive wins for the first time since joining the competition in 2001. The Tigers, who were without young guns Adam Garner and Zach Zdybel, held off St Joseph’s in a two-point thriller at Drew Oval to claim top spot from the two-time reigning premier. “It’s good to get a win against quality opposition up in Geelong,” co-coach Rowan McSparron told K rock’s The Wash-Up. “They had a couple of chances late to get a goal in front, but a couple of them just drifted wide with a little bit of breeze picking up, so we were a little bit lucky in the end.” However, McSparron deflected discussion of Colac being premiership favourite with a spot in the second semi-final all but confirmed. “I was actually talking to ‘Carso’ (St Joseph’s coach Paul Carson) after the game in regards to that, and even he agrees this year that the top five is fairly open. So, if someone gets a run on, I think they can cause some trouble, no matter who it is, in finals.”

SAINTS INTO THE FIVE

St Mary’s has taken its place inside the top five for the first time in 2019 after seeing off Grovedale to the tune of 89 points at Anthony Costa Oval. However, if the Saints are to remain there and book a berth in a fourth consecutive finals series they need to beat Leopold at Memorial Park in the final round. If they can, they’ll face the Lions the following Sunday in an elimination final at GMHBA Stadium.

GOAL KICKING BATTLE DOWN TO THE WIRE

South Barwon’s Andrew Boseley and Leopold’s Lucas Boyd will fight out the GFL goal kicking title, with just one major separating them heading into the final home-and-away round of the season. Both kicked seven goals on the weekend, with Boseley jumping to 55 following a bag against North Shore and Boyd moving to 54 following his return from injury in the win over Lara.
