The Wash-Up – GFL Round 16
- Updated: August 11, 2019

WINNERS
“THE” RESULT
St Mary’s has kept its finals hopes alive, and at the same time ended the September hopes of South Barwon, with a 42-point win in tough conditions at McDonald Reserve. The Saints still need some luck to feature in a fourth consecutive finals series. If they can beat Grovedale and Leopold over the final two rounds, and Bell Park loses to Newtown & Chilwell this week, they could find themselves playing the Lions in an elimination final. “We’ve known the equation now for a few weeks – certainly after the Colac game,” Robertson said. “We’ll face Grovedale, and hopefully get a win there, and see if the (Newtown & Chilwell-Bell Park) result goes our way, and hopefully we’re alive when we played Leopold.”
RECORD LOW FOR SWANS
South Barwon’s score of 2.5 (17) in the loss to St Mary’s was its lowest score since entering the competition as the result of the merger of Barwon and Belmont ahead of the 1990 GFL season. The previous low mark came in that first season as the Swans, when it posted 2.7 (19) vs. North Shore in Round 9.
GOALKICKING AWARD RACE STAYS TIGHT
There was no movement at the top of the GFL goalkicking table on the weekend, which means we could still have the lowest ever tally to win the award. South Barwon star Andrew Boseley was kept goalless as the Swans posted just two majors against St Mary’s and remains on 48. Lucas Boyd (47 goals) missed Leopold’s win over Grovedale due to an Achilles issue. The lowest tally in GFL history was the 52 posted by Grovedale’s Dean Holroyd in 1991.
