WINNERS

GFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 15

“THE” RESULT

St Mary’s ensured it maintained touch with fifth-placed Bell Park by beating third-placed Newtown & Chilwell by 46 points. The Saints moved to nine wins with matches against South Barwon (7th), Grovedale (8th) and Leopold (4th) to come. “Our season’s pretty clear – we need to keep winning,” co-coach Travis Robertson told K rock’s The Wash-Up. “We played a good side today (Saturday) in Newtown, and being able to hit the scoreboard well, which was nice, and had a great win.”

AN EYE ON ROUND 17

With no disrespect to their respective opponents, wins for St Joseph’s (Lara) and Colac (North Shore) appear a mere formality in Round 16. That then makes for a mouth-watering Round 17 meeting at Drew Oval that is likely to decide the minor premiership. Joeys will be hoping to welcome back star Riley Ferguson after he damaged his meniscus early in the win over Bell Park in Round 13. “We’ll look to manage him to get him going because he’s in our best 22 and someone of pretty high importance,” coach Paul Carson said. St Joseph’s may also have former captain Kieran Paliouras for the meeting with Tigers. He’s expected to return from overseas this week and will line-up in the reserves against Lara.

SCHULZE A ‘LEGEND’

Grovedale has elevated Michael Schulze to Legend status at its Hall of Fame function on Saturday night. Schulze, who was an inaugural inductee to the Hall of Fame in 2015, joins Max Esler, Noel Winter, Peter Mann and Ray Taylor as a Legend. New inductees Fred Thomas, Greg Van Hees, Dick Barton, Russell Moore, Tony Martin, Matt Bruhn, Charles Johnson, Nathan Martin, Chris Gibbs and Darrell Winter.

As part of the TAC sponsored Towards Zero round, club captains in community football wore the No.0 across the weekend. At Geelong West, Giants skipper David Peel had his jumper presented by president Gareth Drennan who spoke about Mark Bunney who died on the road in March.

Powerful words spoken by our chairperson Gareth Drennan presenting the 0 jumper to David Peel as part of the Towards Zero round . Gareth speaks about Mark Bunney who died tragically on our roads earlier this year. Mark epitomised a true club person, was a devoted Dad to his girls and great friend to many.#TowardsZeroRound
