The Wash-Up – GFL Round 13

WINNERS
“THE” RESULT
It’s the result that would have sent shudders through the rest of the competition after Colac completely outclassed Newtown & Chilwell to the tune of 95 points. The margin represented a 127-point turnaround from the Round 5 clash at Elderslie Reserve, which the Tigers lost by 32 points. Colac trailed by 12 points at quarter time before slamming on 10-goals-to-one in the second term with the aid of the northerly wind to take control of the contest. C0-coach Rowan McSparron says the range of players contributing, which included 13 different goal kickers, was pleasing. “We had some players who had some really good games, but no one was outstanding by any means. We just had a really even spread and everyone did their little bit when they had to, and it helped get the result that we did,” McSparron told K rock’s The Wash-Up.
ANDERSON STARS AS JOEYS RETURN TO THE TOP
Lucas Anderson has starred with seven goals as St Joseph’s overran Bell Park to reclaim top spot on the GFL ladder. Trailing by 16 points at half time, the Anderson-inspired two-time reigning premier kicked eight-goals-to-one in the third quarter to turn the contest on its head, with the former Wendouree star the key. “Chooka’s form over the last few weeks has been building and building,” coach Paul Carson said. “He kicked seven, but his willingness to compete in the air, and he’s always been a beautiful kick of the footy. In terms of GFL, he’s nearly in career-best (form) right now. That’s awesome.” Carson admits it wasn’t the prettiest performance. “We weren’t playing our best brand of footy by a long a shot for the majority of the first half,” he said. “To Bell Park’s credit, their pressure and their intensity … they came out firing, which we probably knew they were going to. We found a way (to win), and good teams do that.”
McFARLANE SWANS BACK IN
Dane McFarlane made his first appearance in the GFL since the 2015 grand final in Newtown & Chilwell’s 95-point loss to Colac at Central Reserve. ‘Swanny’ has been a regular for Werribee in recent years but was dropped this week by the Tigers. Unfortunately for the Eagles, McFarlane has played 13 games at VFL level this year, making him ineligible to play finals.
BENNETT STARS FOR WERRIBEE
While his Geelong West teammates were busy making life difficult for South Barwon at West Oval, 30 minutes up the road Joel Bennett was playing a key role in Werribee’s VFL win over Port Melbourne. The Corio product kicked five goals as the Tigers maintained its spot in the top five with a 27-point win at Avalon Airport Oval.
TIGERS LOWER POINTS MARK
Colac has set a new record when it comes to the lowest player points total played at since the system was introduced by AFL Barwon into the GFL in 2016. A week after St Albans played at 25 points, the Tigers ran out against Newtown & Chilwell totalling just 24 points. 20 of those wearing the yellow and black were one-pointers, with Zach Zdybel and captain Jack Melican both carrying two points. There is every chance next year will give us Colac running out at 22.
