The Wash-Up – GFL Round 12
- Updated: July 14, 2019

WINNERS
“THE” RESULT
St Joseph’s handed Newtown & Chilwell its first loss since Round 17, 2018, and just the Eagles’ second in 20 matches following a 21-point win at Elderslie Reserve. The win by the two-time reigning premier has opened up the battle for top spot, with Newtown & Chilwell remaining on 42 points and Joeys and Colac improving to 40 with six rounds remaining. Coach Paul Carson says they enjoyed winning the latest ‘Battle of the Milk Bar’. “The vibe was up-and-about, and the boys were feeling pretty good about themselves,” he said. “And I probably tried to add to that a little bit; we like to celebrate our wins, and we don’t take anything for granted, and the boys were excited.” Carson said St Joseph’s went into the clash well prepared for the Eagles. “We dove pretty deep into Newtown throughout the week and dissected what we thought were their weaknesses, and where we could probably get a hold of them,” he said. “We did a lot of homework compared to previous weeks, and the pleasing thing was that probably came to fruition, and we had 22 contributors really play their role.
MAGNIFICENT SEVEN STAR FOR COUNTRY
The GFL-dominated Vic Country team has had the better of the VAFA in the bi-annual clash for the Brian Molony Cup at Carlton’s IKON Park. St Albans recruit Sam Michael was named best for Country, while St Joseph’s Curtis McCarthy (2) and South Barwon’s Andrew Boseley (1) were among the goal kickers. McCarthy’s Joeys teammate Cam Tudor, Newtown & Chilwell young gun Alex Cincotta, Leopold star Marcus Thompson, and Bell Park’s Nik Rokahr were also in the final Country team.
BOSELEY ABSENCE OPENS DOOR FOR BOYD
Andrew Boseley’s selection in the Vic Country team has allowed Leopold’s Lucas Boyd to close the gap in the race for the GFL goal kicking. The South Barwon star held a seven-goal buffer heading into the mid-season break. However, that’s been reduced to four after Boyd slotted three majors in the Lions’ 55-point win over Bell Park. Boseley’s looking to become the first Swan since Ian Tomkins in 1994 to win the award. Boyd would be the first Leopold player to claim the title if can catch Boseley.
KERAS CALLS TIME ON VFL, TSITAS MAKES ANOTHER TIGER APPEARANCE
St Joseph’s will have access to Jordan Keras for the remainder of the 2019 season after his decision to step away from the Geelong VFL program. The health of the Cats’ AFL list has also squeezed out VFL co-captain James Tsitas, which has seen him play consecutive games with Grovedale. Just five VFL-listed players represented Geelong on the weekend. “With our VFL program, it’s AFL first,” Cats coach Shane O’Bree said. “We want VFL players that can play multiple positions and it’s just unfortunate those guys… Jordy didn’t like it, couldn’t cope with it, whereas James understands that he’ll get his opportunity again towards the end of the season. But at the moment there’s a lack of spots. We’ve got Luke Smith and Jackson McLachlan going really well as forwards, then we’ve got Ben Reid and Aaron Black as very reliable defenders. Then you’ve got to play a 23rd and today it was Cooper Jones. That’s how it works.”
CHANDLER CHIPS IN FOR SEAGULLS
North Shore assistant coach James Chandler suited up for his first GFL senior game in seven years in the Seagulls’ loss to Geelong West. Chandler last pulled on the blue and gold in the penultimate round of the 2012 season, a game in which Geelong great Brad Ottens lined up for opponent Newtown & Chilwell. In between, he has stints with BFL club Drysdale and GDFL team North Geelong, which included taking over as caretaker coach in 2016. He returned to Windsor Park in an off-field role last year.
