The Wash-Up – GFL Round 10

WINNERS

GFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 10

“THE” RESULT

ST Mary’s stunning form reversal resulted in its highest-profile victim in beating two-time reigning premier St Joseph’s by 31 points at Drew Oval. The Saints, who were 1-4 going into the interleague break, have strung together five consecutive wins. However, they still sit in seventh spot on the ladder ahead of a clash with fourth-placed Bell Park next week. It’s a match-up Saints co-coach Travis Robertson admits is an ‘eight-point game’. “I checked the ladder this (Sunday) morning, and even though we won, we didn’t move,” he said. We’ve just got to keep winning, and they’re probably in a very similar position. They got the wood on us first time, and, hopefully, we can turn it this week.”

GORE GETS THROUGH

Former Geelong and Adelaide listed midfielder Dean Gore has got through his first game for St Mary’s unscathed after an injury-interrupted first 18 months since returning to the region to link up with the Cats’ VFL squad. He missed all of 2018 with a knee injury, and then after returning during Geelong’s practice matches found himself sidelined after the first round with a finger injury. “He was pretty good; He’s a pretty classy player,” Saints co-coach Travis Robertson said. “I spoke to our playing group before the game and he’s just a ripping guy. He loves the game of footy, and he’s been heavily invested in our program as well. I know it’s hard, and I know it’s not where he wants to be playing his footy, but he was awesome yesterday. He played three quarters on the ball, and then we threw him back in the last quarter, and he was outstanding.

WHITE MAKES FIRST APPEARANCE FOR SEAGULLS

Former Richmond and Port Adelaide speedster Matt White quietly arrived with little fanfare at Windsor Park during the week ahead of North Shore’s clash with Grovevdale. However, the appearance of White, who played 153 AFL games, along with former Tiger and Power forward Jay Schulz wasn’t enough for the Seagulls.

DEBUTANTS

While Dean Gore and Matt White can be considered debutants, Grovedale, Lara, Bell Park, Geelong West and Leopold all unveiled genuine first-gamers on the weekend. Under 19s graduate Scott Morter and former Murray Bushranger Rory Quinn both made their first appearances for the Tigers, with Morter kicking two goals in a 90-point win over North Shore. Local product Connor O’Meara and Matthew Deman, who had previously played some reserves football at Bell Park and with Warrnambool & District League club Kolora-Noorat, lined up for the Cats in their loss to the Dragons, who featured Tom Bryans at senior level for the first time. Carrying a famous Geelong West surname, Sam Kelly kicked one of the Giants’ three goals in the loss to Newtown & Chilwell. And Dylan O’Brien was called out of the under-19s to make his debut in the Lions’ loss to Colac.
