The Wash-Up – GFL Round 1

WINNERS

GFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 1

“THE” RESULT

If you were tipping GFL winners and you picked the favourites, then you you’ve tipped the card. In an opening round where all of last year’s top five played an opponent that missed September action, there were no shocks. However, Colac will be happy to have gone to Lara and returned back down the highway with an 80-point result, while Leopold’s victory at Windsor Park against North Shore may prove crucial down the track.

THE TALKING POINT

North Shore might not have claimed the four points, but they lost no admirers with their performance against Leopold. The Seagulls kicked the first four goals of the game, with Julian Dobosz providing the target they’ve craved in recent years. The class of the Lions, who welcomed back Tom Ruggles for his first game since the 2014 GFL grand final and had former Geelong and Carlton utility Billie Smedts on debut, shone through.

BIG WINNER

South Barwon will have an 11-day break to prepare for their Anzac Day clash with St Joseph’s. The Swans backed up their season-opening win over St Albans with an impressive 50-point victory against Grovedale to retain the John Nankervis Shield. After managing 11 goals between them against the Supersaints, the dynamic duo of Lachie Noble and Jonty Broughton combined for seven majors on Saturday. They now have nine goals apiece.

THE KEY NUMBER

150. Leopold made sure Brandon Howarth’s milestone was a memorable one. The 2016 grand final hero managed two majors in the Lions’ come-from-behind 27-point win over North Shore. The star small forward now has 237 goals at GFL senior level.
