INJURY CONCERN FOR KERSHAW

There was only one downside to St Joseph’s 66-point win over St Mary’s at Anthony Costa Oval, with triple-premiership star Riley Kershaw forced from the ground before half time. “He’s a bit sore on the outside of the knee, but he thinks it might be a bit higher up in the IT (iliotibial) band” coach Paul Carson said. “He’ll be assessed tomorrow (Monday) by the physio and we’ll go from there.”

PICK ME

Overlooked for Geelong’s opening round VFL team, Bell Park’s Luke Smith and St Joseph’s Jackson McLachlan both made cases for a call-up in coming weeks. Smith, who has arrived in town fresh from a premiership with Shepparton in the Goulburn Valley league, kicked seven goals in the Dragons’ 154-point thrashing of Lara. McLachlan, who kicked 13 goals in 12 appearances with the Cats in 2018, slammed home in five majors as Joeys torched St Mary’s.

RECRUITS IMPRESS

St Albans may not have got the four points against South Barwon despite leading early in the third quarter, but there were plenty of positive for the Supersaints to take away. Former Essendon and Brisbane big man Sam Michael is likely to come into interleague calculations, with GFL coach Clinton Wells among the crowd at McDonald Reserve. Three-time Newcomb best-and-fairest winner Jack Hudson showed the step up from the BFL will be no problem in his first GFL senior game since making the last of his four senior appearances for Leopold in 2014.

LATE CALL-UP

Jack Parker was preparing to line-up in Colac’s reserves before getting a call telling him he’d be playing in the senior game after Luke Cardinal withdrew due to food poisoning.
