McMULLAN MAKES HIS CASE IN DEFENCE

It’s no coincidence St Mary’s impressive run to a grand final has come since former Geelong VFL listed big man Trent McMullan’s headed into defence. After spending the first half of the season overseas, McMullan spent some time in the reserves before breaking back into the senior team. “His ability to run and jump at the footy is pretty elite, and that’s probably what the Cats have seen in him,” Saints co-coach Travis Robertson said of the former elite junior basketballer. “He hasn’t had the opportunity to have a VFL campaign this year. But, I’m sure he’ll get that next year. He looks like a natural backman. He has all the assets to, potentially, go a little bit further.”

STAR-STUDDED EAGLES INTO TWOS DECIDER

Newtown & Chilwell has held off a gritty Colac outfit by five points to book a berth in the reserve grade final. After losing its second semi-final to St Joseph’s, the Eagles ensured a re-match with its neighbours in the decider with former Vic Country representative Paul Hinkley and Geelong VFL listed Brayden Helyar among their best.
