The Wash-Up – GFL Grand Final

“THE” RESULT

St Joseph’s claimed consecutive senior premierships for the first time in the club’s history after overcoming a 22-point third quarter deficit to beat St Mary’s by nine points. In a fitting farewell to coach Heath Jamieson, Joeys finished the stronger thank

THE TALKING POINT

AFL Barwon isn’t noted for releasing gate figures, but take away the throng from Colac that turned out to support the Tigers in the reserves and under-19s and it’s fair to say the crowd was down on last year’s St Joseph’s-St Mary’s battle.

BIG WINNER:

Joe Macula. While some started to question whether the veteran still had the ability to mix it with the GFL’s best, Macula delivered an inspired midfield performance to win the AFL Victoria Medal as best-on-ground. It seemed that at every crucial contest during the second half, the 29-year-old was somewhere in the vicinity.

THE KEY NUMBER

36. The number of points St Mary’s played at. It means the Saints could have played versatile big man Sam Siggins. Would he have made a difference? We’ll never know.
