GFL SCOREBOARD – FINALS WEEK 1
SAINTS MARCH INTO A FIRST SEMI-FINAL
St Mary’s co-coach Travis Robertson was always confident the Saints best would be good enough to take care of Leopold in the elimination final, and he was proven to be right. The previous three years’ grand finalist handed the Lions a 90-point hiding to book a meeting with Newtown & Chilwell in next Sunday’s first semi-final. “We just thought they were a little bit questionable under pressure,” Robertson said. “Most times when we get a performance like that, it’s an even spread of contributors we get. I went to pick the best players and it was really hard because everyone really played their part, and that was the theme of the day. And our ability to spread and use the space of GMHBA Stadium certainly helped us late in the game”.
JOEYS SWEAT ON HAINTZ SCANS
St Joseph’s will be hoping scans on a knee injury suffered by 2018 grand final best-on-ground Brant Haintz don’t reveal anything too serious ahead of next week’s second semi-final meeting with minor premier Colac. “He copped a knock to the medial (ligament),” Carson told K rock’s The Wash-Up. “He did finish the game and really finished well. He still contributed (with four goals), which is a credit to him because there would be a lot of guys around who can’t play under that duress. But he still had real impact and managed to hit the scoreboard for us, and that was sensational on his behalf.”
CARSON RAISES LIGHT CONCERN
Paul Carson says the lighting for the second half of Saturday’s first-ever GFL twilight final at GMHBA Stadium wasn’t up to scratch. “Come that last quarter, the standard of lighting wasn’t acceptable, I don’t think,” he said. “Whether that’s because they turned the lights on too late or the globes had to warm-up. But the lighting, for me, didn’t kick in until I left the ground at about 7 o’clock. It was just that last quarter, in the transition to dusk when the sun was going down, it was just too dark for me. For the lighting that’s available, I don’t know why they didn’t crank those up earlier.”
