WORK has begun on the $2.5 million upgrade of the Don Mathieson Pavilion at Anthony Costa Oval.

The redevelopment will see the current facility, which houses the St Mary’s Sporting Club, extended to include a new kitchen, storage and improved community space.

It comes two years after the addition of female-friendly change rooms with the addition of women’s football to the club.

Of the $2.5m, more than half has been contributed by St Mary’s, while $1.165 has come from the state government.

“St Mary’s Sporting Club has a huge membership base, and these new facilities are a major win for the footballers, netballers and community members who regularly access the space,” Geelong MP Christine Couzens said.

“We want all Victorians to have access to high-quality facilities regardless of where they live or what gender they are.”

“The new female-friendly change rooms and accessible facilities will mean greater participation for the clubs”.

krockfootball.com.au understands the redevelopment will allow for the realignment and lengthening of the oval, which is one of the shortest in the region.
