COLAC has extended its club-record start to a GFL season after overcoming St Joseph’s by 37 points at Drew Oval.

The Tigers maintained their half-game buffer on St Mary’s on the back of five goals from veteran forward Jake McGuane and a best-on-ground performance from the returning Ben McCarthy.

“They’ve been the premier teams of the competition for the best part of 10 years now, and going to Joeys and getting the four points is always a tough task,” coach Rowan McSparron told The Wash-up podcast.

“But, I think the way we ground out the win was the most pleasing thing.

“It wasn’t pretty at times, but we stuck to our task and ended up getting the job done.”

The win over St Joseph’s started a challenging run for Colac, which faces fellow top-five teams Bell Park, South Barwon, Geelong West and St Mary’s in the next month.

“We are starting to see these teams get their better players back on the park, too,” he said.

“Bell Park are starting to put their best list together, and Joeys had a few players back yesterday from Round 1 that didn’t play us.”
