THREE-time Mathieson medallist Matt McMahon has avoided further surgery on his troublesome Achilles tendon but is now racing the clock to be fit for Round 1 of the GFL season.

Newtown & Chilwell’s captain met with his sports doctor on Thursday hoping for news that would help him push ahead with his recovery.

However, McMahon will now take a more conservative approach with his rehabilitation.

“I’ll have to not think about Round 1 too much.; I’m not cancelling it out completely,” he said.

“I went to see the doctor to fast-track the process a little bit so that I would be right for the start of the year.

“But now that’s not the best way forward for it and now it’s more of a management issue.”

McMahon, who last year became the only player in GFL history to win a hat-trick of Mathieson medals, will continue to work closely with club physiotherapist Pete Stanton.

“We’re really lucky to have Pete working with us and in my corner,” he said.

“He’s been working on it quite a bit, and he will continue to work on it. I’ll keep seeing him, go back to the doctor every now and then to see how it’s tracking.

But, for now, it’s a lot of just letting it heal as best it can still and go from there. I’ll take it a bit easier than what I have been on it.”

The 30-year-old has admitted to some frustration that his rehab hasn’t gone to plan.

However, with his career closer to the end than the beginning, McMahon is willing to be patient.

“Best case scenario was that I would be back into some sort of running in the new year. So, you set your mind on that, and when you don’t reach that goal, it is starting to get a bit frustrating,” he said.

“Now, it’s not setting a goal to return, but making sure it’s really right to go.

“When you’ve probably only got a couple of years left, you don’t want to be taking too many risks with an injury like that.

“It does get frustrating when you don’t meet certain timelines along the way. I guess that’s just the nature of the injury.”
