Saturday Spotlight – GFL Round 6

St Mary’s vs. South Barwon @ Anthony Costa Oval – Saturday, 2:10pm

Lara vs. North Shore @ Bisinella Oval – Saturday, 2:10pm

St Joseph’s vs. Grovedale @ Drew Oval – Saturday, 2:10pm

St Albans vs. Bell Park @ The Gordon TAFE Oval – Saturday, 2:10pm

Geelong West Giants vs. Colac @ West Oval – Saturday, 2:10pm

Newtown & Chilwell vs. Leopold @ Elderslie Reserve – Sunday, 2:10pm

Newtown & Chilwell and Leopold meet in what should be a cracking Pride Cup clash at Elderslie Reserve. Since the Lions handed the Eagles an 88-point hiding in last the inaugural Pride Cup game in Round 8 last year, Newtown & Chilwell has won 14 of its next fifteen matches, including the opening five rounds of 2019. After losing its opening round clash to Colac, Leopold has won four consecutive matches. However, the Lions will be without the likes of captain Sam Hughes (calf), Tom Gordon (knee), Kevin Bourke (groin) and Sam Scott (suspension) on Sunday.

Williamstown-aligned Geelong West star Lane Buckwell will miss the rest of the 2019 season after scans confirmed he suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in the win over Grovedale. Buckwell, who only returned to the Seagulls from another knee reconstruction late last year, was playing his fourth game for the Giants. “He was building into some form, and, unfortunately, he’s done his knee again,” coach Greg Mellor. “It was just one of those things where two guys went up for a mark and he just landed awkwardly. The boys were really enjoying him and his expertise around the group.”

St Mary’s and St Albans will both wear black armbands in honour of local football great Eric ‘Bricka’ Smith. ‘Bricka’ who died suddenly on Sunday, played with the Saints and coached their reserves in the early 1980s, including to a famous premiership in 1982. He also had close ties to the Supersaints, where his son Steve is currently playing football, while he also has a daughter and granddaughter playing netball. His wake was held at St Albans Reserve on Thursday.
