If you only see one home-and-away game of the GFL season, make it St Joseph’s and Colac in what looms as a grand final preview as well as a minor premiership playoff. After a mid-season stumble, Joeys have strung together six consecutive wins. The Tigers have strung together 11 consecutive wins, having not lost since being on the end of a 32-point defeat by Newtown & Chilwell at Elderslie Reserve in Round 5. Among those victories was a 42-point result against St Joseph’s in Round 9. On that day, veteran forward Jake McGuane slotted five goals and former skipper Ryan Monaghan and veteran ruck Lochie Veale dominated.

Star St Albans big man Sam Michael is unlikely to play again in 2019 as he continues to battle a knee issue suffered representing Vic Country in mid-July. “He suffered a knee knock in the VCFL game, so to go on and win the medal with a crook knee, he did a great job,” Supersaints co-coach Chris Carlon said. “Unfortunately, for us, that’ll mean he’ll probably miss the rest of the season. We’re just going to assess it week-by-week.” Carlon says Michael has avoided surgery. “It’s a bit of a medial tweak and he pinched a bit of cartilage,” Carlon said. “The bloke that he is, I’m sure he’ll try and get back. But we’ll definitely go conservative.” In better news, Jake Watson-Serle will return from an ankle injury. He’ll replace the suspended Andy Higgins.

Leopold will be without star duo Jai Thompson and Tom Ruggles for the clash with Lara. Thomson will miss with an arm injury, while Ruggles is battling an ear infection. Lucas Boyd, who sits second on the GFL goalkicking table and Werribee-listed ruckman Jack Berry are among the likely inclusions for the Lions. A big win for Leopold and a loss for Newtown & Chilwell to Bell Park could see last year’s minor premier jump into third spot with one round remaining.
