Saturday Spotlight – GFL Round 16

THE GAMES

Lara vs. St Joseph’s @ Bisinella Oval – Saturday, 2:10pm

Grovedale vs. Leopold @ Burdoo Reserve – Saturday, 2:10pm

Colac vs. North Shore @ Windsor Park – Saturday, 2:10pm

Bell Park vs. Geelong West Giants @ Hamlyn Park – Saturday, 2:10pm

South Barwon vs. St Mary’s @ McDonald Reserve – Saturday, 2:10pm

St Albans vs. Newtown & Chilwell – Saturday, 2:10pm

MATCH OF THE ROUND

A virtual elimination finals for sixth-placed St Mary’s (36 points) and South Barwon (32). A loss for the Saints wouldn’t be fatal for their hopes, but with Bell Park favoured to beat Geelong West, they would be two games out with two rounds remaining. Defeat for the Swans would likely end a season that hasn’t really had any momentum at McDonald Reserve. South Barwon has named North Melbourne VFL midfielder Mitch Rodd and former captain Reece Woods for the clash. St Mary’s will welcome back Max Augerinos and may have access to Dean Gore, depending on if he is required by the Cats’ VFL team.

MORPHET TO GO ONE MORE

Leopold has re-signed coach Guy Morphet for a third season in charge at Memorial Park. Morphet, who replaced Steve Clark at the end of 2017, took the Lions to last year’s minor premiership before exiting the finals race in straight sets. Leopold looks set to appear in a GFL club record fourth consecutive finals series, with a win over Grovedale on Saturday a chance to seal at least an elimination final berth. However, they will be without key forward Lucas Boyd after he failed to overcome an Achilles strain.

SEASON OVER FOR GIANTS BIGS

Injury has ended the season of key Geelong West Giants’ talls Jayden Symes and Jye Bohm. Symes has been sidelined after suffering a fractured cheekbone and eye socket in the loss to Leopold in Round 14. “It was just a head clash. It’s one of those things that happen and he had surgery Monday,” coach Greg Mellor said. “Jye’s got a bulging disc in his back and it’s unlikely we’ll see him as well. So having two of our key big players, that’s given Jack Grigsby an opportunity to play. He’s been everywhere. He’s still eligible for under-19s, but he’s played twos footy, he’s played Falcons, so he gets the opportunity now to play senior GFL footy, and I think he’s got a lot of potential.

VFL DEBUT FOR GROVEDALE’S GARONI

Grovedale key forward Hudson Garoni will make his debut with VFL club Werribee on Saturday. He’s been selected as 23rd player for the Tigers’ clash with Box Hill at Avalon Airport Oval. Originally from Ovens and Murray club Wodonga, Garoni has kicked 20 goals from nine games in an injury-interrupted first season in the region.

DAVIES LATEST TIGER DEBUTANT

Speaking of Grovedale, Liam Davies will be the 18th player to wear the black-and-gold for the first time in 2019 when he runs out against Leopold. Davies has played 11 games in the Tigers under-19 team after returning during grading from a knee reconstruction.

COBBA EXPANDS PROGRAM

Former Grovedale coach and South Barwon premiership player Craig McCaughan has expanded his FootyFit program to include a mentorship program. Running over six sessions across Geelong and Torquay in term four of the school year, the mentorship program is for junior footballs aged from 8-16 years of age who are passionate about the game and want more than just training at their junior club. DEB DEPARTS AFL BARWON

After nearly 12 seasons as the smiling face behind the front desk in the office of Football Geelong/AFL Barwon, Deb Thewlis has retired. “What a fantastic contribution Deb has made to local football and netball by providing significant support internally to all staff but also all clubs across a range of areas,” AFL Barwon Region General Manager Will McGregor said in an email to clubs and affiliates. “Deb has built some fantastic relationships across the many years and now will take a step back to enjoy some well-deserved time in retirement.  Deb has made a great contribution to AFL Barwon and for that, we are extremely grateful.”
