MATCH OF THE ROUND

All roads lead to Elderslie Reserve for the highly-anticipated clash between arch-rivals Newtown & Chilwell and St Joseph’s. The Eagles have made their best ever start to a GFL season, sitting unbeaten after 11 rounds. While the two-time reigning premier sits six points behind after consecutive losses to Colac and St Mary’s before beating South Barwon before the break. Both teams will be without players on Vic Country duties, with Newtown & Chilwell young gun Alex Cincotta and Joeys duo Curtis McCarthty and Cam Tudor heading to Melbourne to take on the VAFA. However, the Eagles will be boosted by the return of Darcy Troop from a two-week suspension.

SEASON OVER FOR JOEYS BIG MAN

St Joseph’s has suffered a blow with ruck Josh Hovey to missed the rest of the season with a ruptured tendon in his finger. Hovey returned to Drew Oval from Torquay last year to play a role in the grand final win over St Mary’s having been part of the drought-breaking success against Newtown & Chilwell in 2015.

150 FOR SHEZ

Tim Sheringham will become just the eighth person in the GFL’s 41-season history to coach 150 games when Bell Park hosts Leopold at Hamlyn Park. Sheringham has been in the role since 2012 when he and Ben Armstrong took over from John Fitzgerald in the wake of the Dragons’ most recent premiership. That partnership endured until the end of 2016 when Armstrong stood down and was replaced by Luke Rayner. Rayner was in the role for two years, with Shane Jack now in the position. During the Sheringham era, Bell Park has posted 96 wins, 52 losses and a draw.

CLUBS HONOUR INFLUENTIAL FIGURES

Lara, Newtown & Chilwell and North Shore will all pay tribute to key figures in their respective clubs histories on Saturday. The Cats will wear black armbands and observe a minutes silence before the senior football, A grade netball, and A grade baseball for former Lara Sports Club president Peter Kutchenmeister and ex-player and LSC secretary Laurie Anderson. The Eagles will wear black armbands in memory of triple-premiership winning coach Kevin Higgins, as will the Seagulls for life member Barry Cook.
