South Barwon vs. St Joseph’s @ McDonald Reserve – Saturday, 2:10pm

Geelong West Giants vs. Lara @ West Oval – Saturday, 2:10pm

All eyes will be on Anthony Costa Oval to see whether St Mary’s can extend its winning streak to six when it hosts Bell Park. After starting the season 1-4, the Saints are unbeaten since the interleague break. Bell Park has been quietly going about its business but had to work hard to get past Lara. The Dragons also haven’t been another team in the top half of the ladder, with the victory over St Mary’s in Round 2 their only success against a team with a positive win-loss record. VFL selection may have an impact on this clash.

South Barwon young gun Brandon Verfurth has made a timely return to McDonald Reserve after spending the first half of the season overseas. Verfurth, who sits on 47 GFL senior games, will make his return through the Swans’ reserves after resuming training this week. Verfurth battled a hip issue last year that restricted him to just 12 senior games. “His work took him overseas, and then he extended that into a holiday,” coach Dave Farrell said. “For him, it was as much to clear his head and get his body right. While he’s been travelling, he’s put in a solid six-week training program, and he says his body is feeling back to its best. It’s pretty exciting for us and great news for him. You don’t want to see a bloke at his age sitting out of footy.”

Former St Mary’s star Ben Lavars will step down as coach of Bendigo league club Maryborough at the end of the season. The Magpies could muster just one win during Lavars’ first year in charge in 2018 and finished only percentage clear of the bottom-placed Castlemaine. 2019 has been more fruitful, with Maryborough climbing to sixth spot after 10 rounds after posting four wins. Former Essendon, Western Bulldogs and Geelong forward Stewart Crameri has kicked 17 goals from five appearances.

“The Voice of Burdoo Reserve”, Craig “Matho” Mathieson will be hoping to mark his 50th birthday with an upset win by Grovedale when his beloved Tigers host Newtown & Chilwell. Happy Birthday, Matho.
