Bell Park vs. Lara @ Hamlyn Park – Saturday, 2:10pm

South Barwon vs. St Albans @ McDonald Reserve-  Saturday, 2:10pm

Geelong West Giants vs. Newtown & Chilwell @ West Oval – Saturday, 5:10pm

St Mary’s vs. St Joseph’s @ Anthony Costa Oval – Saturday, 7:10pm

MATCH OF THE ROUND

Anthony Costa Oval at 7:10pm is the place to be as the arch-rivals go head-to-head to open the 2019 season. How will the St Mary’s forward line function following the departure of Tom Gillies, Sam Dobson and Aiden Grace? What reception will St Joseph’s give former teammate Ben Moloney, who chose an assistant coaching role at the Saints over returning to Joeys when he called time on his VFL career?

HORNSEY BACK IN THE FOLD

Records aren’t an exact science when it comes to the GFL, but Tom Hornsey will likely set some of a record when he runs out for Grovedale’s clash with North Shore at Burdoo Reserve. Hornsey last played at GFL senior level in St Joseph’s 2009 grand final loss to South Barwon. He then went on to make his name as a punter in the US College system with Memphis, winning the Ray Guy Award as the nation’s top punter in 2013. He fell just short of getting a shot at the NFL, spending time with a number of teams, including the Dallas Cowboys.

WELCOME BACK

St Albans co-captain Tristan Battaglia will make his first appearance for the Supersaints since the final round of 2017. Battaglia missed all of the 2018 season with a serious knee injury. The former Geelong Falcon, who has played 85 games and kicked 77 goals in the black and white, will share the captaincy duties with Brent Vermuelen.

WELCOME BACK (2)

Star defender Paul Hinkley has had his clearance from Cobden confirmed and he will pull on a Newtown & Chilwell jumper for the first time since his outstanding 2016 season. Hinkley represented the GFL and Vic Country that year, and no doubt GFL interleague coach Clinton Wells will be tracking his progress in the opening few rounds.

KEY NUMBER

179. Glenn Keast will move into outright fourth for games coached in the GFL when St Mary’s hosts St Joseph’s under the lights of Anthony Costa Oval. He passes John Fitzgerald and sits behind only Terry Bright (208), Terry Emond (193) and Steve Clark (185). No man has coached more wins in the GFL’s first 40 years than Keast, with a record of 130 wins, 47 losses and one draw.
