Saints set for season-defining fortnight

CLASHES with St Joseph’s and Bell Park will form part of a season-defining fortnight before the bye for St Mary’s according to co-coach Travis Robertson.

After starting the season with four losses in the opening five rounds, last year’s runner-up has strung together four consecutive wins to sit within a game of the top five.

However, with Joeys and Bell Park having the better of the Saints in the first two rounds, Robertson knows two victories won’t come easy.

“Round 1 wasn’t great,” Robertson said. “We were in the game at half time, but after that she was pretty flowing not our way.

“I was saying to someone the other day it was a really good game of footy up there last year, so, hopefully, we can dish up something similar.

“If we can win the next two, the top three could be in our sights.

“But we’ve got a pretty formidable side in front of us this weekend.”

After their early-season issues, which included injuries to several key players, including former Joeys and VFL star Ben Moloney, Tom Lang, Josh Cowan and Jesse Travaglini, St Mary’s is starting to resemble the team that reached its third straight grand final last year.

“We’ve got some player availability now, which is nice,” Robertson said.

“So selection is getting a little bit harder, and I would suggest that will be the case for the next few weeks.

“We’re hoping we might see Dean Gore next weekend, and then there’s Harry Kol, Trent McMullan is back in town.

“There’s a bit more depth there to add.”

While Williamstown-listed Sam Conway played in the reserves last week as a result of team balance, Dylan and Hayden McMahon are still to return, and former Gold Coast and Geelong Falcons defender Josh Jaska is taking a break to as he battles a wrist problem that required surgery when he was at the Suns.

“We’ve put him on ice to get more rehab into that,” Robertson said.

“He’ll come back in the coming weeks as well.”
