Relief for Reid

A SIGH of relief is being breathed around Drew Oval after scans cleared St Joseph’s star Reid Adams of a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

The two-time reigning premier had feared Adams had done his knee for a second time after he went down in the third quarter of Joeys’ loss to St Mary’s on Saturday.

However, coach Paul Carson confirmed Adams has escaped with just a hyperextension and will miss up to a month.

“We had some good news through this (Tuesday) morning that there’s no ACL damage there,” Carson said.

“Watching the vision, he (Adams) said there was a hyperextension of the knee, which you can clearly see.

“There’s still a little bit of soreness … he’s probably a four-week injury, but fantastic news that it’s not another operation required for Reid.”

Adams has had a wretched run of luck with injuries in recent years.

He missed a large part of the 2016 season after rupturing his ACL before returning to be part of St Joseph’s premiership the following year.

However, Adams was denied the chance of being part of Joeys’ run to consecutive premierships in 2018 due to a hamstring injury that kept him sidelined until last month.

“He has had some horror luck, but this is far, far better than the worst-case scenario, of course,” Carson said.

“But, still, it’s not ideal, is it?

“Knowing Reid, he will be dotting every i and crossing every t he can to make sure he’s in good nick to come straight back.”

Carson also confirmed big man Lech Featherstone is unlikely to return for Saturday’s clash with South Barwon after missing last week with general soreness.

“He’s been gradually getting a bit sorer with every week,” Carson said.

“It’s probably doubtful he will even play this weekend, and coming into the bye, it’s probably a chance to give him a really good spell and freshen him up.”

It’s also hoped Jack Buckley (wrist) and Tasmanian recruit Nic Hutchinson (shin) will be right to play their first games since Round 6 and Round 1 respectively following next week’s mid-season break.
