REIGNING GFL premier Leopold has appointed veteran midfielder Matt Pitt as captain for 2017.

Pitt replaces Jai Thompson, who has found a spot on Geelong’s VFL list.

Coach Steve Clark says he spoke with Thompson and his coaching staff before deciding on the veteran midfielder, who carved out an impressive career with Ballarat league club Redan before joining

“He’s an extremely experienced player and we thought with his cool head and the way he goes about his footy, he’d be perfect for the role,” Clark said.

Clark says the decision to step down by Thompson, who captained the Lions 92 times, was a reflection of his selfless nature.

“He felt that with the way our culture is, our captain would need to be around the club full time,” Clark said.

“We had a discussion about that and decided he would release the pressure of being captain from himself so that enables him to settle into playing VFL footy and still have an impact at the footy club without worrying that he was letting one or the other down.”

Elsewhere Vic Country midfielder Matt McMahon has been appointed captain of Newtown & Chilwell, replacing Dan Feery.

Jackson Sheringham and Luke Rounds will share the role at Bell Park previously held by Ben Johnson, while Paul Presani and Ryan Monaghan have replaced rookie coach Kane Leersen at Colac.
