DELISTED Geelong rookie Jamaine Jones will have Lara as his VFL interchange club if he doesn’t find a new AFL home.

The GFL Cats have confirmed their signing of the 21-year-old, who is reportedly on the radar of North Melbourne and Carlton.

However, if a spot on an AFL list doesn’t eventuate, Jones is set to join VFL club Footscray, leaving the door open to play with Lara when not required by the Bulldogs.

Drafted by Geelong with pick No.48 in the 2016 Rookie Draft, Jones played seven games across his three seasons on the list.

He was delisted last month after failing to play an AFL match in 2019.

“He’s got some chances of getting picked up, and we hope he gets another chance,” coach Shayne Stone said.

“If that doesn’t happen, we’re more than happy to be his local club.

“He’s already been to training and shown the sort of person he is and what he can bring to our group.

“He’s in the right age demographic for us as we look to grow the list.”

Stone says former Geelong star Mathew Stokes, who is working at the club and playing with Lara, played a role in Jones arriving at Bisinella Oval.

“He called ‘Benno’ (president Shane Bennett) to tell us to get in touch with Jamaine,” Stone said.

“He’s an advocate of ours and knows what we’re doing.

“He’s comfortable with what we’re doing and is happy to help us our improve our list.”

However, the Cats have suffered a couple of blows, with best-and-fairest Nick Egan and co-captain Jordan Hopper both departing.

Egan will join GFL rival Newtown & Chilwell, while Hopper is believed to be off to a GDFL club.
