ST JOSEPH’S has kicked three goals in the final four minutes to overrun St Mary’s and claim consecutive AFL Barwon under-19 Division 1 premierships.

Trailing by 22 points at three-quarter time, and still 12 points in arrears at the 16-minute mark, Paddy DeGrandi was the hero for Joeys when he goaled with just 16 seconds remaining to give his team back the lead.

Coach Michael King concedes he thought St Joseph’s had blown its chance at the final change.

“At three-quarter time, I thought we were done,” he said.

“I just spoke from the heart, and I said “take the game on, take the game on … just play on, just take risk after risk.

“I think everything they touched just turned to gold in the last quarter.

“Mary’s tried to defend, but we kept going.”

Geelong Falcons listed Joeys star Jack Mullen was named best-on-ground.

“I thought ‘Stoof’ was outstanding,” King said.

“He’s passionate; he loves his footy.”

King also paid tribute to big man Tom Zampatti, who checked himself out of hospital on the morning of the game after a battle with glandular fever.

“He actually wasn’t going to play 10 minutes before the game,” King said. “We had our emergency warmed up ready to go.

“I did the fitness test on him because he didn’t want to make the call; he wanted me to make the call.

“And thank God we did.”

As well as Mullen and Zampatti, Xandar Harrison, DeGrandi and Lewis Antonac also impressed, while Sam DeFrancesco kicked three goals.

Jay Dahlhaus, who overcame an early-season knee injury at the Geelong Falcons to return to football, showed his class with three goals for St Mary’s

Sam Christensen, Seth Fiegert and Lachie Peck, who also kicked two goals, were also solid contributors for the Saints.
