Jamo confident in Joeys

OUTGOING St Joseph’s coach Heath Jamieson has given little thought to his six-season tenure coming to an end, instead, he’s focused on winning two more games of football to give him the perfect finish at Drew Oval.

After a disappointing qualifying final display against St Mary’s, Joeys bounced back to beat South Barwon by 33 points in the first semi-final to earn a crack at minor premier Leopold in Saturday’s preliminary final.

“I’m confident I’ve got a playing group that’s still got a bit of time left this year,” Jamieson said.

“As far as I’m concerned, I’m not thinking about that (finishing up) at all. I’m extremely focused on Leopold this week, I think I’ve got a group that’s coming together pretty well at the right time of the year.

“We wobbled a bit late but I think we’ve put that to bed over the last few weeks and I’ve got feeling that some of our best footy can be played over the next couple of weeks.”

The two teams met just once during the home-and-away season, with Leopold running out comfortable 58-point winners in the Round 10 clash at Memorial Park.

However, Jamieson is reading little into that result and its impact on this week’s meeting with the Lions.

“One thing we know, we’ve watched plenty of Leopold footy this year – they’re a great footy side, they’ve been the form team of the competition,” he said.

“We don’t have to go too far to see how a team can respond from a second semi-final loss. This time last year we were in a similar position to what Leopold find themselves in and were able to bounce back really quick.

“So we don’t walk out on Saturday thinking the game is going to be easy, we look forward to the challenge.

“But we also sit well knowing our best footy is still right up there with Leopold and St Mary’s, and it’s just about producing it on the big day.”

In a boost for St Joseph’s, defender Callum Mitchell returns from Geelong VFL duty, however, former skipper Kieran Paliouras is racing the clock to prove he’s overcome a hamstring issue.
