Injury blows for GFL

GFL coach Clinton Wells will have to make do without 2018 Team of the Year trio Ryley Hall, Ryan Monaghan and Tom Ruggles in Saturday’s AFL Victoria Community Championships 1v2 clash against Northern at Queen’s Park.

St Mary’s defender Hall is battling an ankle issue, Colac’s Monaghan (soreness) and Leopold Ruggles (unavailable) have joined Ruggles’ Lions teammate Tom Gordon and Bell Park’s Luke Rounds as those missing from the original 36-man squad.

Wells also confirmed veteran Colac big man Lochie Veale is also racing the clock after suffering hamstring tightness late in the Tigers’ loss to Newtown & Chilwell.

“He’s going to get that assessed tomorrow (Tuesday) and will know a little bit more as to his availability,” Wells said.

“Big Sam Michael (St Albans) is still right to go, so we’re really looking forward to his inclusion into the interleague team, and I think he will be able to offer us first use around the ball.”

St Joseph’s forward Jackson Davis (hip) is also no certainty to play, while Geelong’s VFL team may require fellow Joey Jackson McLachlan and Dragon Luke Smith.

“And unfortunately Charlie Wilson hasn’t played a GFL game yet, so he’s ineligible,” Well said.

“But it’s fantastic for him to be playing so much VFL footy.

“With Luke and Jacko, we’ll know more Wednesday or Thursday as to their availability.”

Wells and his selection panel were due to meet last night to discuss their likely 23-man line-up.

“We’re just waiting on those VFL guys, and hopefully we won’t have to make too many hard decisions, in terms of cutting guys,” he said.

That was our plan the whole way along; get a smaller squad together that with VFL, a few injuries, and a couple of unavailabilities that would pretty much take us to the team that’s required to play.”

The GFL will train Tuesday and Thursday night at Queen’s Park.
