I wanted to go again: Mitchell

DEPARTED St Mary’s coach Troy Mitchell has revealed he was keen to coach on at the GFL club in 2018.

A statement released by the Saints yesterday said work commitments would prevent Mitchell – a career firefighter – from continuing in the role, but Mitchell says he wanted a third season in charge as part of a restructured coaching panel where he would have shared the role, as he did in 2016 with Bryce Vincent.

“I did put a proposal to the club that I thought I could coach again, and I thought we could structure it up the way we wanted to,” Mitchell said.

“But, unfortunately, circumstances didn’t actually go that way … we couldn’t come to an agreement on what we thought that should be.”

“I won’t be coaching next year and (assistant coach) Kane Purcell won’t be at the club either.”

Mitchell is disappointed he won’t get the chance to take St Mary’s to a premiership after successive runner-up finishes.

“I think we’ve done a hell of a good job getting the club to where it wanted to be,” he said.

“When I first got involved, the idea was to develop within what we had, and I think we’ve all done that together and put a lot of work into that.

“I think the result we’ve been able to provide have been really good.

“At the same time, the boys have put a lot of trust in me. I feel a little bit disappointed that we’re not going to be able to go through that journey and try and finish it off.

“But, I still think what we put in place, and the characters of the individuals at the footy club – especially the playing group – I still that they can get the job done, and I’ll definitely be hoping that that’s the case.”

Mitchell, who moved into equal ninth alongside Paul Lynch and Damien Christensen for games coached in the GFL with St Mary’s grand final appearance, is unsure whether he’ll coach again.

“I don’t know,” he said.

“There’s a lot of time that goes into it and you’ve got to find that right place that ultimately sees it the same way you see it, and values it the same way.”
