GEELONG West coach Greg Mellor’s work in developing one of the GFL’s youngest list has been recognised with a one-year contract extension.

The Giants playing group was told on Tuesday night the former Richmond assistant coach, who took over from Andy Viola at the end of 2017, would be continuing in the role in 2020.

“Having Greg come on for a third year in-a-row is going to help with our group,” Geelong West football boos Sarah Naylor said.

“We’re slowly getting there. We’ve already got more wins than we did last year, so we are definitely moving on up.

“Having a few of our senior players depart last year, we’ve got an even younger group.

“But they seem to be rising to the challenge of senior football, and really impressing our coaching group and football department.”

Mellor’s re-signing comes less than a week after West’s GDFL contingent re-signed Andrew Clark and Mitch Wight for next year.

Naylor says the feedback on Mellor from the players has been overwhelmingly positive.

“They think that Greg is definitely the person to take us to our next flag,” Naylor said.

“And they’re very happy with the way he motivates people, and he expects a lot from our group.”

The Giants will be chasing their fifth win of the season when they travel to Leopold on Saturday.
