Eye on 2020 for Mellor

AS much Greg Mellor would love to see Geelong West end the GFL season with three wins and finish with eight victories for 2019, he isn’t focused on what the scoreboard says for the rest of August.

Instead, the Giants mentor, who will have a third season in charge at West Oval in 2020, will use the remainder of the season as a foundation that will hopefully take the club forward.

“We’ve got other things we’re working on as a playing group that we’ve identified,” Mellor said ahead of Saturday’s clash with Bell Park.

“And we’re making sure we execute those consistently, and try and play a brand of footy that we know can stack up.

“Whilst, right at the moment, we’re still making fundamental errors as we’re building towards that, we are really clear on how we want to play.

“And that’s more important, right now, than the scoreboard.”

With Mellor’s reappointment confirmed in late July, West has turned its attention to finalising its list for next year.

“We’re doing the same as everyone; we’re trying to make sure that we can have everyone who is at our club stay.

“We know we’ve got a lot of talented kids coming through from our under 19s, and there needs to be room for them to come in.

“But we’ve also got a few holes in our list. We’re going to specifically target some key signings to build on our group and hopefully take us another step forward next year.

“We’re probably no different to everyone else with key backs and key forwards, and a big-bodied mid would be our preferences.”
