ST MARY’S has closed the book in its recruiting for 2018 in fine style by adding former Geelong midfielder Josh Cowan.

The Saints this morning revealed the addition of Cowan, who was being sought by at least one other GFL club.

Co-coach Travis Robertson says St Mary’s had been in discussions with the 26-year-old either side of Christmas and will play a key role in the Saints midfield as they look to go one better than consecutive grand final losses.

“The playing list was vocal when we (Robertson and co-coach Glenn Keast) started that they thought they needed a it of expertise and experience back into the midfield,” Robertson said.

“I’m hoping that he’ll add that.”

GFL INS & OUTS

Drafted with pick No.56 in 2009, Cowan was limited to just 16 games in his eight seasons at Geelong, as he battled a range of injuries.

As a result, Robertson doesn’t expect Cowan will play every game for the Saints.

“Speaking to him last night, he’s maintained his fitness,” Robertson said.

“He’s obviously had his fitness challenges, but he’s also worked out what works for him and what doesn’t.

“He’s coming to training on Monday and he expects to do the majority of the session. So he’s ready to go in terms of that sort of fitness.

“But we’ll need to monitor all that and make sure we get him right at the end of the year.”

Cowan will arrive at Anthony Costa Oval as six-point players under the points system, and with the Saints having added the likes of Geelong VFL signees Dean Gore (six points) and Sam Siggins (four), Robertson admits they’ll have a juggling act with the points.

“We probably will,” he said.

“They played the grand final a lot lower than the 40 (they played at 33), but we’ll work through that.

“You’ve got to pick your best side on the day, don’t you?”

“How points plays out, we’ll have to work that out.”

MEWANWHILE, Geelong West, Bell Park and Newtown & Chilwell have all confirmed signings in the last 48 hours.

The Giants have added Lochie Huppatz from VFL club North Ballarat, the Dragons have signed Ben Lloyd from Ovens and Murray club North Albury, and the Eagles have welcomed former Geelong Falcon Luke Maddock after time in the WAFL with Claremont.
