A STANDALONE night clash between reigning premier St Mary’s and Leopold will start the 2021 GFL season.

As krockfootball.com.au revealed on December 24, the Saints had approached the Lions about shifting their Round 2 match-up at Anthony Costa Oval from April 24 to April 10.

It followed the release of the AFL fixture, with Geelong scheduled to play West Coast at GMHBA Stadium on the 24th.

“Under a long-standing agreement, St Mary’s do not play at home when GFC play at Kardinia Park,” AFL Barwon said in a statement.

“The fixture change has been agreed to by both Leopold and St Mary’s.”

As part of the agreement, the return meeting between the Lions and the Saints will be played as a Sunday match on July 18 as part of Round 13.

The Round 2 clash will give St Mary’s the chance to finally unfurl its 2019 premiership flag and showoff its redeveloped Don Mathieson Pavilion.
