THE 2021 GFL season looks likely to start a week earlier than scheduled, with the Round 2 clash between St Mary’s and Leopold set to be brought forward a fortnight.

Following the AFL Fixture release earlier this week, which has Geelong hosting West Coast at GMHBA Stadium on April 24,  it is understood the Saints have approached the Lions to play a night match on April 10.

Under an agreement with the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, St Mary’s cannot play on Anthony Costa Oval the same day the Cats are at home.

Moving the game to the following day would clash with the traditional ANZAC Day match-up between South Barwon and St Joseph’s,

The Saints are expected to use the night to unfurl its 2019 premiership flag, while also having the upgraded Don Mathieson Pavillion on show on GFL game day for the first time since its redevelopment.

Depending on the VFL season’s start date, St Mary’s may also have access to former Geelong forward Wylie Buzza.
