GROVEDALE assistant coach Luke Delaney has announced his retirement on the advice of medical specialists.

Hip issues plagued the 28-year-old during the final years of his 63-game AFL career with North Melbourne and St Kilda, and have continued since returning to the Tigers in late 2016.

“It’s deteriorating at quicker rate than what I would like and what the medical people would like,” Delaney said.

“By playing footy and training three nights a week, it’s only fast-tracking bigger issues down the track.

“It’s my own best interests to try and tone that back a bit and give it a bit of a breather, and that way I’m not in as much pain and managing it as much as what I am the minute.”

Delaney, who is due to become a father for the first time next month, says the issue is the result of wear and tear.

“As I’m getting a little bit older it’s not pulling up and responding how it used to,” he said.

“The amount of physio that I used to be able to receive to look after it, I could get away with it.

“Whereas now, not getting that much medical treatment and working full time, then trying to do the injury prevention stuff to keep it in the best condition possible, it’s probably viable.”

Delaney will stay involved as an assistant to new coach Simon Riddoch, but his decision is a further blow to a list that has already lost the likes star forward Jordan Erskine, the versatile Adam Donohue, inside midfielder Brad Surkitt, talented youngster Matt Boag, and defensive duo Jordan Harrison and Beau McNamara.

However, he is confident Grovedale will remain competitive with the addition of names like Cassidy Parish, Keelin Betson, Jacob Bruns, Alex McCann, Matthew Harvey and Zac Urquhart.

“I would have loved to stayed on with the young, vibrant group that are looking to create their own culture and their own way,” Delaney said.

“I wouldn’t wipe us completely off; I know a lot of people have.

“We’re just going about our business pretty quietly and are happy with where we’re sitting at the minute.”
