A POTENTIAL clash with Geelong training during the AFL’s pre-finals bye has seen AFL Barwon push back the start times for the GFL qualifying and elimination finals.

The timings are based on when Geelong is scheduled to play its first final, with the Cats to require access to GMHBA Stadium at stages on the weekend of August 31-September 1.

Under the three scenarios, the senior match would start at 3:45pm, except if Geelong plays a Saturday final.

If that were to occur would, the qualifying final on August 31 would bounce at 5:45pm, giving the GFL its first-ever night final.

Region General Manager Will McGregor says AFL Barwon is embracing the chance to try something different.

“We’re always looking to find new initiatives and come up with new concepts,” McGregor said.

“If they’re successful, we’ll look to implement things such at this into the future.

“If not, then we’ll revert back to traditional formats.”

McGregor says AFL Barwon has been in talks with the Kardinia Park Stadium Trust, the Cats and GFL club presidents for the past fortnight about potential scenarios.

“One of the things that we did before making any of these decisions was to consult with the clubs affected, and there was general support,” he said.

“The general theme that came out of it was that they just wanted to be informed early so that they can play accordingly.”

McGregor says times will likely revert to something more traditional for the semi, preliminary and grand finals.

“Again, it will probably be dependent on what happens in regards to the AFL finals series,” he said.

“But, I’d be more inclined to keep the more traditional format at this stage.”

McGregor added AFL Barwon wouldn’t be out-of-pocket to use the lights, while netball will be played at the usual times on the Kardinia Park courts.
