Break a bonus for coaches: McSparron

COLAC coach Rowan McSprarron says the shutdown of local football is not necessarily a drawback for some of the region’s longer-serving coaches.

Matches won’t commence until at least early June as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, with the season to be shortened if we do get a start.

“It’s probably a good chance for us to freshen the mind up and get a bit clearer thinking as well,” McSparron, who is onto his sixth consecutive season as coach, which included a four-year stint at Geelong Amateur, said.

“I think it could be a bonus for the coaches, just to get a little bit of breathing space because coaching is a 12-month gig with recruiting and setting up pre-season, and the structures and everything that goes with the season.

“In that regard, you’re probably just taking a step back to a certain degree.”

McSparron, who is out-of-contract at the end of this year, said he’s yet to speak with the Tigers about extending his tenure into a third season.

“We just take it a year at a time down there, and when they get sick of me they’ll let me know,” he said.

“It’s a fantastic club to be involved with, so I’m happy to have a chat with them and see what they want to do next year.

“If a better candidate comes along, I’m not going to stand in the way of that.

“We’ll just have a chat as the year goes on. I’ve got a pretty good relationship with ‘Gibbo’ (president Matt Gibson) and we talk regularly, so we’ll keep in touch in that regard.”

With clearances closed, discussions with young gun Ethan Flloyd on his request to join Colac and District club have been halted.

However, McSparron expects there to be a player transfer window if the 2020 season does get a start.

“I think there will be a little bit of grace there with AFL Barwon and AFL Victoria in regards to clearances,” he said.

“With kids from the country moving down to Geelong, they may be cleared back to their original clubs.

“I think there should be some commonsense there.”
