LACHIE Edwards has been appointed caretaker coach of Belmont Lions for the remainder of the 2019 season.

The Lions have confirmed Edwards, who returned to the club from a season at Bell Park over summer, will fill the role vacated by Ash Witney’s earlier than expected departure from Winter Reserve.

Alex Hann and Jason Young will be his assistants, with Scott Pickett and Andrew Atchison also stepping away from their roles.

Witney revealed last week he wouldn’t be seeking a contract extension with the GDFL strugglers due to work commitments but would coach out the season.

The Lions, who won five games in Witney’s first season in charge in 2018, sit 10th on the ladder with just one win in so far this year.

They face, Anakie, which also only has one win to its name, at Anakie Reserve on Saturday.
