West not factoring in Linton

GEELONG West coach Mitch Wight isn’t factoring in James Linton for the 2021 season despite the star midfielder lodging a clearance to the GDFL club.

The former Ocean Grove captain and Colac premiership player has been in discussions with the Giants since before Christmas about making a move.

However, Wight says Linton plans to travel around Australia this year and won’t necessarily be available.

“He said in the initial conversation I had with him that his mates have all come here, and if he’s going to play at all, he’d rather play with his mates,” Wight said.

“So, no commitment as far as games or anything goes, and I know that he’s doing a fair bit of travel.

“If we could get him for any sort of period, it’s a massive bonus, but we’re not banking on anything at this stage.”

Linton, who has VFL experience with Geelong, joins a conga line of players from Ocean Grove to arrive at the Giants.

“The connection we have with the Ocean Grove has meant he came on to our radar pretty quick,” Wight said.

“To be honest, I haven’t really had any of the discussions; it’s all been his friends that have got in his ear.”
