West almost there

FOR 17 years, Geelong West had been unable to find a way to beat Bell Post Hill.

At three-quarter time of Saturday’s clash at West Oval it appeared that streak would continue into an 18th season.

However, with the chance to snap a 21-year finals drought on the line, the Giants were able to claw their way in front with a goal to captain Scott Jervies late in the contest, before holding off the four-time reigning premier for a famous win.

“We thought we’d played pretty well in the second and third quarters – just didn’t get a lot of result on the scoreboard,” West coach Andrew Clark told K rock’s The Wash-Up.

“So we just spoke about persistence and we thought it would come at some stage, and I said to the boys, “keep playing the way we’re playing and things will come our way, which they did in the last quarter, which was pleasing.
