The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 9

WINNERS

GDFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 9

“THE” RESULT

A Jarrod Westwood-inspired Thomson has produced a stunning final quarter burst to keep alive its unbeaten start to the 2019 season with a 16-point win over Bannockburn at Victoria Park. Trailing by seven points at the last change, Westwood kicked three goals in the opening stages of the fourth quarter to give Thomson a lead it wouldn’t surrender. “They (Bannockburn) had a couple of guys that went down,” coach Reece Holwell told The Wash-Up. “‘Brauey’ went down before half time, and another of their young mids (Brayden Vicars) went down as well, so we thought that our rotations were going to stand up, and we thought that if we could keep outworking them at the contest, and once the game slowed down a little bit in that last quarter, if we could find some space and get it on out the outside with our leg speed in (Joel) Menzies and guys like that, that we’d probably have the advantage.”

FIGHT FOR FOURTH AND FIFTH ON IN EARNEST

With Thomson, Inverleigh and Bannockburn appearing certainties to play finals, the battle for fourth and fifth seems to be a race in five. Fourth-placed Winchelsea appears in the box seat to return to finals for the first time in five years, which leaves Geelong West, Werribee Centrals, North Geelong and East Geelong to battle it out for an elimination final berth.

BLAIR’S IMPRESSIVE RUN CONTINUES

Alex Blair’s strong form in front of goal continued with eight majors in Geelong West’s 71-point win over Belmont Lions at West Oval. It follows hauls of five against Werribee Centrals last week and six against North Geelong in Round 7.
