The Wash-Up – GDFL Round 7

WINNERS

GDFL SCOREBOARD – ROUND 7

“THE” RESULT

East Geelong’s resurgence has continued with the 61-point win over Bell Post Hill its first over the Panthers since the 2009 grand final. The Eagles, who now sit just percentage outside the top five ahead of a testing clash with arch-rival Thomson, have four wins for the season, equalling their return for the entire 2018 season. “It was a pretty good win,” coach Jeremy Power said. “For the guys to come up against a team that’s troubled us for many years, it (the win) was pretty pleasing.” Jack Elliott kicked another four goals for East Geelong to take his tally for the season to 25, five behind league-leading goal kicker Mitch Habib. Power says Elliott has been a beneficiary of the Eagles’ improvement. “I think it’s just the way we’re playing as a team,” he said. “We’re a bit more organised with the way it comes out of our backline, and the mids have got some chemistry now, and he’s really being able to benefit from that. Last year we probably chopped and changed our ball movement, so he couldn’t get on to the end of some good footy. But he’s also winning some inside footy as well.”

TALKING POINT

Is the GDFL a race in one? Reigning premier Thomson made light work of Winchelsea to the tune of 52 points to remain a game clear on top of the ladder. The next month will tell us more. If the Tigers roll over the top of fellow finals contenders East Geelong, Bannockburn, Inverleigh and North Geelong, it will be hard to make a case for anyone preventing Thomson claiming consecutive flags for the first time since 2006.

MULLANE-GRANT MAKING WAVES IN THE MOUNTAINS

In case you were wondering what former Bannockburn spearhead Tom Mullane-Grant was up to these days.

DEBUTANTS IMPRESS

A couple of teenagers got their first taste of GDFL senior football on Saturday. Guz Fraatz was among the best players as Geelong West came from 13 points behind at three-quarter time to win by 46 points. While at Belmont Lions, 16-year-old Tyson Neal kicked a goal and was among the best in the loss to Inverleigh.

THE KEY NUMBER

20. The number of one point players North Geelong ran out with against Geelong West must be some sort of record in the Geelong region. While other clubs have had lower total points than the Magpies’ 28, it is rare to see just two players carrying more than a point. For the record, they were James Vanderkley and Matt Runnalls at four apiece.
